But I had such a great time at the picnic, and afterward, I went to the Crystal Recording Studio, where that vibe just came to me. I thought about running around at the picnic and all the various contests we participated in. It was so much fun... and that's where the vibe for 'I Wish' came from."

The lyrics underwent a more difficult process. While the song addresses childhood and teenage experiences, Wonder initially wanted to cover broader themes. He stated, "I wanted to incorporate many cosmic and spiritual elements, but the music was so fun that the lyrics didn't match." He added, "I couldn't come up with stronger lyrics than the chorus, 'I wish those days [clap] would [clap] come back once more.' Thankfully, we didn't change that part."

In the television series Classic Albums, Wonder demonstrated part of the song while explaining how he composed and arranged it. He played the keyboard and drums himself, using most of the musicians who participated in the original recording.
