In 2015, Paich explained that the song reflects a man's love for the African continent rather than a simple personal love story. He wrote the lyrics based on the impact of a late-night documentary that depicted the pain and struggles of Africa. "It moved and shocked me, and those images stuck in my head," Paich said. Jeff Porcaro added, "A white kid is trying to write a song about Africa, but since he's never been there, he can only write from what he sees on TV."

Some of the lyrics reference a person leaving on a plane to meet a lonely missionary. In 2018, Paich elaborated on this background, stating that he had attended a Catholic school where some teachers had done missionary work in Africa. Their efforts inspired the line "Bless the rains down in Africa." At that time, Paich had never been to Africa, and the landscape descriptions in the song were drawn from articles in National Geographic. Steve Lukather jokingly remarked that he would run naked down Hollywood Boulevard if the song became a hit.

Music experts note that "Africa" was the second song written for the Toto IV album and underwent extensive studio work. Ultimately, the band grew tired of the song and considered removing it from the album. However, as it began to gain popularity in New York dance clubs, Sony decided to release it as another single.
