"Stand by Me" was originally released in 1961 by American singer-songwriter Ben E. King, co-written with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who used the pseudonym Elmo Glick. According to King, the title was inspired by the gospel song "Stand by Me Father" by Sam Cooke and J.W. Alexander. The song was also recorded by Soul Stirrers, led by Johnny Taylor.

 

"Stand by Me" was featured in the 1986 film "Stand by Me," and a music video with King and actors River Phoenix and Wil Wheaton was produced to promote the film. The song was further popularized in Europe through a 1987 Levi's 501 jeans commercial. By 2012, the song's royalties were estimated to exceed $22.8 million (around £17 million), making it the sixth highest-grossing song of its time, with 50% of the royalties going to King. In 2015, just about five weeks before his passing, King’s original recording was added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." That same year, the Drifters recorded the song to honor him.

The song has been remade by over 400 different artists, including notable artists like Otis Redding, John Lennon, Muhammad Ali, 4 the Cause, Tracy Chapman, musicians from the Playing for Change project, Florence and the Machine, Weezer, and the Kingdom Choir.
