The Bee Gees wrote the song and co-produced it with Albhy Galuten and Karl Richardson. It is one of the Bee Gees' signature songs. In 2004, "Stayin' Alive" was ranked 189th in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and in an updated list in 2021, it rose to 99th. In 2004, it was ranked 9th in AFI's 100 Years... 100 Songs survey of the greatest songs in American cinema. In December 2011, it was selected as the 5th favorite Bee Gees song in ITV's UK TV poll titled "The Nation's Favourite Bee Gees Song."

Upon its release, "Stayin' Alive" quickly climbed the charts, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the week of February 4, 1978, where it stayed for four consecutive weeks. This contributed to the song becoming one of the Bee Gees' most recognized tracks, partially thanks to its use in the opening credits of Saturday Night Fever. In the U.S., it became the second of six consecutive number-one singles for the Bee Gees, tying with The Beatles at the time (a record later broken by Whitney Houston with seven consecutive number ones).

At the 21st Annual Grammy Awards in 1979, "Stayin' Alive" won a Grammy Award for Best Vocal Arrangement for Two or More Voices and received three additional awards, including Album of the Year.
