Gordy renamed the group and had "Brianbert"—a partnership between Brian Holland and Robert Bateman—rework the song. The 1992 Motown box set Hitsville USA: The Motown Singles Collection lists Dobbins, Garrett, Holland, Bateman, and Gorman as songwriters. The Songwriters Hall of Fame recognizes "Please Mr. Postman" as the work of Holland, Bateman, and Gorman only. Currently, the music publisher of the song is EMI Music Publishing, which credits all five writers in its catalog.
